Economic Appraisal of solar air heating system used for drying
Considering the numerous advantages of solar drying technology and the fact that, still solar drying units are not readily available, commercially, there is an urgent need to identify the various problems and find appropriate solutions, for solar drying technology to reach its potential. The literature available on the topic and the field experiments conducted in different countries reveal that, in addition to the various technical problems, there exists also the economic aspects that needs to be examined closely. Also, it is a well established fact that no device is useful unless it is economically viable. High construction, operational, maintenance and interest rate are the major problems associated with solar drying technology The capital cost of the plant construction must be drastically reduced for the successful implementation of solar drying technology. Research efforts that will help lower the cost of such units should be continued. The development and use of cheaper, more durable, locally available materials for the construction of drying units, without jeopardizing their performance, should be an ongoing effort.
