Transient tracers studies of the ocean circulation
Over the last hundred years or so, a variety of relatively long-lived, man-made chemical species have been introduced into the environment and have made there way into the ocean. Once in the ocean, these chemicals are mixed and advected by the ocean circulation. we can then use the distribution of these chemicals to trace a variety of processes in the ocean: this is the basis of what is called tracer oceanography.

Obiettivo formativo: The structure of this lecture is the following: “transient tracer concept”: what they are, what information we can derive from their distribution and what kind of processes they can trace. Following their input functions and their internal clock. Then focus on the typical tracers used in physical oceanography and will show some examples of their use in the Atlantic ocean and in the Mediterranean Sea.
