Life Cycle Assessment basic course

This course gives an introduction to Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). LCA is a methodology that provides a way of assessing the environmental impact associated with the whole life cycle of a product or service, from its cradle to its grave. “Cradle-to-grave” begins with the gathering of raw materials to create the product and ends at the point when all materials are returned to the earth. The course aims at giving practical guidance on how to interpret LCA results. The training should supply a basic level of understanding on how to carry out an LCA and an understanding of the implied uncertainties, value-choices and trade-offs. Also, an understanding of the benefits of using "standards" developed in the CASCADE project should be achieved. The standards for LCA used in the CASCADE project are the ISO 14040-14043 standards and the technical specification ISO/TS 14048. The training package has been produced in the context of the EU-project CASCADE (contract no. G7RTCT-2001-05045). The document "LCA course for users of LCA data and results" was developed for CASCADE at Industrial Environmental Informatics, Chalmers University of Tecnology. It has been used as the basis for the web course with simplifications, inclusions and adaptations made by FEBE EcoLogic to make the language and the content more suitable for newcomers, especially from SMEs. The main reference document is: Raul Carlson, Ann-Christin Pålsson, "ISO/DEVPRO IRAM LCA training course"; - Chalmers University of Technology.
