Handling of dangerous substances 3rd Part : Operations and Procedures

The course, created on the basis of IMO (International Maritime Organisation) texts, deals with the handling of the dangerous substances in the harbours, but it’s valid for every field where such substances are used. The course is in English because it’s both IMO’s official language and it’s the universally accepted language in the transport area. The course provides information for the training of those having responsibility in the handling of chemical products, of liquified gases and petroleum products. It also includes information about oil pollution and about the responsibility and the compensation deriving from the pollution. It also provides a legislative background concerning the handling of dangerous substances and their transport, including information about chemistry, cargos characteristics, safety norms, emergency situations and fire extinguishing. Other important issues as the prevention and control of pollution, evacuation plan are discussed and a general overview of international conventions aimed at preventing or decreasing the pollution caused by accidents is also provided. The course also considers the need of proper interfaces between ship and quay for a good handling of containers for petroleum and chemical products or liquefied gases.
