OPTS Lessons Introduction

Dr Salvatore Sau, OPTS project coordinator, introduces and describes OPTS project that aims at developing a new Thermal Energy Storage (TES) system based on single tank configuration using stratifying Molten Salts (MS, Sodium/Potassium Nitrates 60/40 w/w) as heat storage medium at 550°C maximum temperature, integrated with a Steam Generator (SG). The system is intended to provide efficient, reliable and economic energy storage for the next generation of trough and tower plants. There will be introduced three lessons about CSP technology, focusing the attention on different kinds of plants, describing heat tranfert fluids and storage used by CSP systems, with a particular attention to the innovative idea proposed by OPTS project.
